About Us

Point of Departure is a relatively new band, and has endured 3 incarnations since early '96. Their music is an eclectic mix of hardcore, funk, prog rock, punk, ska, and even jazz. The band consists of four members--Mike Olson on vocals, Sean Gallagher on bass, Jon Cross on drums, and Derek Schmidt on guitars.

The first name for the band was Young Pete
Franklin, and the musical style was influenced more by ska and jazz, and even blues.


With the addition of Mike Olson on vocals, the group's sound became heavier, with more hardcore and prog rock influences.

Mike Olson (vocals)

The latest addition to the P.O.D. roster, Mike brings energetic vocals and solid rhythm guitar work to the group.

Sean Gallagher (bass)

Sean founded P.O.D. with Derek in September '96 for a high school talent show. He had been studying for 2 years at the time.

Jon Cross (percussion)

Jon studied drums for 5 years under Ken Vogel, columnist for Modern Drummer
Magazine
, before joining in December '96.

Derek Schmidt (guitars)

Derek studied guitar for 3 years under Vic Martinez and Charles Hansen, both renowned jazz guitarists, before starting the band with Sean in '96.
